Tempest Productions Presents
La Scafetta: The Foundling Drawer
based on poems by Mary Rohrer-Dann
adapted for the stage by Cynthia Mazzant
Haunted by the mother who abandoned her, clashing with her teacher, Gabriella searches for a kindred spirit, love, and identity beyond her violin.
A new verse play exploring the history and role of the foundlings at Venice's Ospedale della Pietà. In the 17th and mid-18th centuries, la Pieta was a famous stop on the Grand Tour due to the excellence of its all-female orchestra and choir. The figlie di coro performed at Mass and Vespers from behind grilles in the high choir galleries or "cantorie." Much of Vivaldi's sacred vocal and instrumental music was written for performance at the Pietà.
This event is made possible in part by Poets House’s
